WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's swimming and diving team lead after the first day of the 2003 Purdue Invitational. Purdue finished the day with 231 points.

The team rankings after 6 events are: Purdue (231), Northwestern (189.50), Southern Illinois (176), Iowa (170.50), Ohio State (88), Wyoming (87), and Buffalo (69).

Leading the way for Purdue were the divers who took four out of the top five spots in the 1-meter diving competition. Junior Clay Davis finished in second with a score of 297.95. Sophomore J.R. Hillis followed Davis with a score of 279.85 to finish in third. Finishing fourth and fifth for the Boilermakers were freshman Steven LoBue (262.05) and sophomore Joshua Karshen (266.55).

Juniors Louis Paul and Iggy Goh both had third place finishes before the day was over. Paul had his in the 200 IM with a time of 1:48.22, while Goh finished third in the 50 free with a time of 21.01.

Finishing the day off strong for Purdue was the 400 medley relay team. The team of Paul, senior Tamas Bessenyei, Goh, and junior Eric Prugh took second place with a time of 3:20.76.

Head coach Dan Ross was very excited to see the efforts given by both his divers and swimmers.

"The divers are getting better and better after each meet. Diving coach Wenbo Chen and all of the divers are doing a great job. Hopefully we can see some more highlights from them in the next couple of days."

The Purdue men's swimming and diving team will be back in action tomorrow at noon for the second day of the 2003 Purdue Invitational at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
