IOWA CITY, Iowa - Purdue men's swimming and diving posted new season-best times in both relay events on the opening night of the Big Ten Championships Wednesday, marks that doubled as the second fastest in program history.

Chuck Destro, Albert Miller, G. Daniel Michael and Danny Tucker teamed up on the 200 medley relay team. Their time of 1:27.56 was less than a second shy of the program record from 2009.

Ben Wachtel, Brian Kiel, Guillermo Blanco and Matt Friede comprised the 800 freestyle relay foursome. They finished in 6:29.44, a mark that was also just one second behind the school record set last year at the Big Ten meet.

Wachtel's opening-leg time of 1:38.11 in the free relay also represented a team season-best mark in the 200 free.

On the boards, Alec Back and Sean Mokhtari teamed up to take fourth in an exhibition competition of synchronized 3-meter diving.

Michigan won both relay events Wednesday to take an early in the team points. The Wolverines set new pool records in both events and posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 800 free relay.

The Big Ten Championships continue Thursday with preliminaries at noon and finals at 7:30 p.m. ET. Thursday's schedule features the 50 and 500 free, 200 IM, 1-meter diving and 400 medley relay.
