David Kaiser is in his second year as an assistant with the Boilermaker track and field program. In his first year with Purdue, Kaiser served as the throws and pole vault coach for both the men’s and women’s track and field teams. In a span of eight months with the Boilers, Kaiser coached 13 NCAA qualifiers and four Big Ten record holders, as well as coaching the pole vaulters of Purdue’s women’s team, which went on to win the 1999 outdoor track and field Big Ten Championships. Kaiser’s most impressive accolade is coaching five Big Ten Champions in 1999 (Kiersten Doyle: indoor and outdoor pole vault; Jeremy Ashcraft: outdoor pole vault; Chris Spurrier: outdoor shot put; Chris Brown; indoor weight throw).
Kaiser came to West Lafayette from Clemson University in 1998, where he served as assistant and co-interim head coach of the Tigers’ women’s track and field team. Kaiser also acted as an administrative assistant for the men’s and women’s track and field programs from Sept. 1997 - June 1998.
Kaiser specialized in coaching field events and multi-events while at Clemson. He coached two NCAA All-Americans, while a total of 25 Kaiser-coached athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships during his five-year tenure. In addition to those successes, Kaiser coached eight Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champions, nine school record holders, and 23 All-ACC performers while at Clemson.
Kaiser worked at ACC rival Wake Forest from 1991-93. In that combined men’s and women’s program, Kaiser served as recruiting coordinator and meet manager while coaching sprints, hurdles, relays, field events and multi-events. While in Winston-Salem, Kaiser coached one NCAA All-American and five NCAA qualifiers. Four of his athletes garnered ACC titles and six earned all-conference honors. Under Kaiser’s assistance, the Demon Deacons broke 21 school records.
Kaiser began his coaching career at Kansas under the guidance of former USA pole vault development chairman Rick Attig. While in Lawrence, they developed the best collegiate pole vault trio in NCAA history (18-05.00 average) and produced numerous All-Americans, including international competitors Scott Huffman, a former American record holder and 1996 Olympian, and Pat Manson. A number of athletes have gone on to international success under Kaiser, including a 1996 USA Olympic trials qualifier, a 1994 Olympic Festival East Team member and nine Finnish athletes who earned top 15 national rankings in Finland. Kaiser also was the USA Pole Vault Regional Chairman for th Ohio Valley Region.
Kaiser earned a bachelor of science in education from Kansas in 1988. He earned his master’s degree in education with a concentration in sports administration and kinesiology from Kansas in 1992. He became USA Track & Field Level 1 certified in 1989 and Level 2 certified in 1990.
Kaiser resides in Lafayette, Indiana with his wife, Amanda and his daughter Suzannah.
