WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The new-look Purdue men’s golf team swings into the new season this weekend with the loaded Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minnesota.

Competition will begin Sunday at Windsong Farm Golf Club with 16 teams slated to play 36 holes. The third and final round will be played Monday at the 7,368-yard, par-71 layout.

This will mark Purdue’s second appearance at the Gopher Invitational, the other coming in September 2005, where the Boilermakers finished tied for third. It also marks Purdue’s first trip to Minnesota since the 2010 Big Ten Championships, played at Windsong Farm GC. The Boilermakers shot 1,177 over four rounds to finish fifth in that event.

The field will be one of the strongest of the season for the Boilermakers. Eight teams from last year’s NCAA Championships, including defending national champion Oklahoma will be in the field. Ten teams ranked in the nation’s top 50 by the Golf Coaches Association of America are included. The field includes national powers Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Iowa, Kent State, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pepperdine and San Diego State, among others.

PURDUE TEAM NOTES
• Purdue’s lineup will consist of two freshmen (Cole Bradley, Jason Hong), two juniors (Timmy Hildebrand, Jarle Volden) and one senior (Brian Carlson). It marks the first time since the spring of 2014 that head coach Rob Bradley will have two freshmen in the lineup. Another freshman (Joe Weiler) will compete as an individual.
• Just four players on the roster have appeared in a college tournament. Senior Brian Carlson leads the way with 34 events played, while Jarle Volden (24), Timmy Hildebrand (15) and Thomas Lewis (5) have also seen action.
• In the four previous years under Coach Bradley, Purdue has finished in the top five in 31-of-51 events played. Prior to Bradley’s arrival, Purdue needed seven full years (86 events) to finish in the top five 31 times.
• Purdue has reached three of the last four NCAA Championships. Purdue and Illinois are the only Big Ten teams to have multiple NCAA Championship appearances in the last five years.
• Four of the top six stroke average team totals have come during the Bradley era. Last year’s team posted the second-best 18-hole team average in school history (290.26).
• Last year’s team produced 12 team rounds of even or under par, the second most in school history (2015-16; 13 rounds).
• The four lowest 54-hole tournament scores have come under Bradley. In Purdue history, there have been 25 scores of 859 or better. Eight of them have come in the Bradley era.
Timmy Hildebrand won the Northern Amateur and a U.S. Amateur qualifier this summer.
Jarle Volden made the quarterfinals in the British Amateur, narrowly missing out on a spot in the The Open Championship. He also competed in the Viking Challenge on the European Tour as one of five amateurs in the field.
• Two Purdue freshmen, Matt Lloyd and Cole Bradley, won state medalist honors in their respective states. Lloyd was a California high school state champion in 2017, while Bradley won the 2015 Indiana state title.
• In addition, Brian Carlson, Timmy Hildebrand and Thomas Lewis led their high school teams to state championships.
Timmy Hildebrand has risen to No. 149 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
