PARK RIDGE, Ill. - The top scoring freshman in the league in 2010-11, Purdue's Adam Schenk was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Monday in an announcement by the conference office.

The Vincennes, Ind., native is the second Purdue player to ever win the award, and the first since Chris Mayson took home the trophy in 2000. He was also named Purdue's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, bestowed upon one player from each of the league's 11 teams.

"Adam is certainly deserving of this award after the freshman year he had," Purdue head coach Devon Brouse said. "He's been our No. 1 player most of the year and had the best stroke average on our team in his first year of college golf. We're happy for Adam and looking forward to building around his talents over the coming years."

Schenk led the Boilermakers and all Big Ten freshmen with a 73.13 stroke average on the season, shooting par or better in 14 of his 31 rounds during the regular season (45.2 percent). He fired a season-best 65 in the third round of the Windon Memorial Classic in September, and posted four rounds in the 60s on the year.

Schenk won a pair of individual medals during his rookie season with the Boilers, pacing the field at the Purdue/Midwest Shootout in September and the Boilermaker Invitational in April. He also turned in a third-place finish at the Windon and a 10th-place tie at the Big Ten Championships.

Schenk and the rest of his Purdue teammates will await next Monday's NCAA Regional selection announcement to see if they have earned the opportunity to compete in NCAA play for the first time since 2007.
