Purdue Places 4th at Northern

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Purdue men’s golf team posted its second round of even-par or better to finish fourth at the Northern Intercollegiate hosted at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

The Boilermakers shot a 54-hole total of 2-under par 862 (286-289-287) to finish fourth behind Marquette (832), Virginia (845) and Iowa State (860). Michigan was fifth (864), Northern Illinois was sixth (869) and Illinois State placed seventh (870).

The Boilermakers once again showed their consistency with three players shooting even-par or better during the third round. Purdue finished the event second in the field in pars made (172) and second in par-4 scoring (+19).

Leading Purdue was senior Brian Carlson who recorded his second straight top-20 finish with a seventh-place showing at 6-under par 210 (70-70-70). It marked the third time in his career he was under or even-par in all three rounds and his finish was his ninth career top-10 finish, good for 10th on Purdue’s all-time list. He recorded an eagle on his final hole, the par-5 18th, to lift Purdue past Michigan into fourth place.

Junior Jarle Volden finished tied for 21st at even-par 216 (71-73-72). Volden was 2-under par through 11 holes, but bogeyed three holes in a five-hole stretch to drop to 1-over par. He would birdie the final hole to reach even-par for the second time in three rounds at Rich Harvest Farms.

Playing on the counting team for the first time in his career, freshman Joe Weiler had a strong final round to finish tied for 30th at 3-over par 219 (75-74-70). Weiler quickly moved under par during his round with a birdie on No. 2, and would stay between one- and two-under par for most of his round. He would birdie No. 18 as well to finish with his 70.

Timmy Hildebrand finished tied for 33rd at 4-over par 220 (72-73-75). Hildebrand was even-par through 16 holes before suffering a quadruple bogey on the difficult par-4 17th hole. He rebounded and birdied No. 18 for his final-round 75.

Cole Bradley finished tied for 51st at 9-over par 225 (73-73-79).

Individually, freshman Jason Hong had an outstanding tournament, finishing tied for eighth at 4-under par 212 (72-70-70). Hong was 3-under par during his round before a bogey on No. 16, dropped him to 2-under par for the day. However, he was able to par the final two holes to record his first career top-10 finish.

Thomas Lewis also competed as an individual, finishing tied for 59th at 12-over par 228 (79-76-73).

Purdue will remain in the Midwest next week, competing in the Erin Hills Invitational at Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wis., beginning Sunday. Erin Hills was the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.
