WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championships began on Wednesday at the Kampen Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The event, hosted by Purdue University, proved on the opening day to be as challenging as anticipated. After round one, top-seed Southern California and No. 9 seed UCLA share a one-stroke lead over No. 4 seed Oklahoma State. USC and UCLA recorded team totals of 297, while the Cowboys fired a 298.
"This course is like a U.S. Open, where it really comes down to hitting some fairways," Southern Cal head coach Chris Zambri said. "I think we drive it pretty well, but we also drive it pretty long, which is one of our strengths. The longer you hit it, if you hit it offline, the further offline it goes, so our strength becomes not necessarily a weakness, but with the rough so high, the premium is on hitting it in the middle of the fairway."
Only three of the 156 golfers recorded below-par rounds. Kevin Chappell of UCLA seniors holds the individual lead after firing a three-under par 69 in the first round. Chappell recorded five birdies and two bogeys en route to the low-round for the day.
"I got off to a good start," Chappell said. "My whole goal for the day was to be even par after playing 15 (holes) because with the direction the wind was blowing, I thought that I could get at the last three holes. I just kind of stuck around there all day. I feel like I left a few out there on the par fives on the front side, but I couldn't ask for a better way to start."
David Markle of Kent State and Tim Sluiter of USC are tied for second and just one stroke behind Chappell after each carding a 70 on Wednesday.
Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler, the top-ranked individual in the field, shot a two-over par 74 and is tied for 10th.
Thirty teams and six individuals are competing for the NCAA team and individual titles at the Pete Dye redesigned Kampen Course. Wednesday's temperature reached 68 degrees in the afternoon under a cloudless sky with very little wind on the 7,450-yard, par 72 course.
The second round of the NCAA Championships is scheduled to begin with tee times starting at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday. Live scoring of the entire tournament and live video of the third and fourth rounds can be found on Golfstat.com.
