Boilers Compete in UNC Charlotte Birkdale Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team finished the first day of the UNC Charlotte Birkdale Classic in 14th place after an 18-hole score of 310. The tournament is being held at the Birkdale Golf Course (Par 72, 7013 yards) in Huntersville, N.C.

Freshman Lee Williamson is tied for 47th place the strength of a one-over par 73 to lead the Boilers after the first round. Right behind Williamson are seniors Colby Huffman and Bert Jones and sophomore Ryan Miller who each shot 78's to stand in a eight-way tie for 58th place. The other Boiler participating in the Birkdale Classic is junior Ryan Cate who carded an 82 which is good for 82 place.

The 18-team tournament is led by Nebraska, who collectively shot a first-round score of 286 to lead by one stroke. North Carolina is in second at 287, while Augusta State is third at 290 and Old Dominion and Virginia-Commonwealth are tied for fourth at 293 to round out the top five.

Individually, North Carolina's Don Hill carded a first-round score of three-under par 69 to lead by one stroke over four other competitors entering the final round of play tomorrow. The third and final 18 holes will be played tomorrow morning.
