Brick Boilermaker Golf Course Complex Rates and Fees Announced
Site to be opened July 1.
April 3, 1998
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- After nearly two years of design and hands-on construction by famed golf-course architect Pete Dye, Purdue University's Kampen Course (formerly North Course) is scheduled to open around July 1. Already in use is the Ackerman Hills Course (formerly South Course) which also has undergone significant upgrades.
These two courses, plus a new clubhouse and shelterhouse make up the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Without a doubt they are assets to Purdue and the local community. Their operation will be self-supporting, contribute to the support of the men's and women's varsity golf programs, and generate sufficient revenues to maintain the courses in first class condition. The approved usage rates for 1998 are shown in the following table.
The charges are affordable for staff, students, and all area golfers. Restraints have been added for unlimited-play season passes and corporate outings which should make the courses reasonably available.
Pete Dye golf courses are difficult, challenging layouts and the result is often slow play. The Kampen Course for example is approximately 7,500 yards long. In order to maintain the desired speed of play, both for revenue generation purposes and to ensure accessibility for as many golfers as possible, use of electric carts on the Kampen Course will be mandatory, except that after 2 p.m., this requirement will be waived for Purdue students. The cost of cart usage is included in the charge for all play on the Kampen Course.
To assist in maintaining fairways and greens in optimal condition, metal spikes will not be permitted on the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The replacement of metal spikes to non-metal spikes will be provided free of charge for the first replacement.
Purdue's new Director of Golf, Devon Brouse, in connection with assistants Doug Hill and Mike Wall, and Superintendent Jim Scott, will oversee the operation of all golf facilities beginning July 1, 1998. For additional information, the golf course phone numbers are (765) 494-3139 or (765) 494-3216.
