Joe Holland continue to roll in as the Indianapolis native has been named a first team Capital One Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Holland's first team selection is 19th all-time for the Purdue football program and the second consecutive year for a Boilermaker.
Holland, who was recognized by the National Football Foundation as one of 16 national Scholar-Athletes at a banquet in New York on Tuesday, has a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average in movement and sport science. He was a second team Academic All-American in 2010, in addition to being a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District V honoree. Upon the completion of his football playing days, Holland plans to attend dental school.
On the gridiron, Holland has racked up 315 tackles in his career, which places 20th nationally among active collegiate players and in a tie for 16th all-time at Purdue. In 2011, he has recorded a career-high 85 tackles, including 47 solo stops, with 8.5 for losses and 1.5 sacks.
Holland and his Boilermaker teammates have earned Purdue's first bowl invitation since 2007, and will take on Western Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit on Dec. 27.
