WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Fifth-year senior Anthony Heygood has been named the Purdue football team's Most Valuable Player for the 2008 season, it was announced this evening at the 88th-annual Purdue-Kiwanis Football Banquet at the Purdue Memorial Union. The winner is determined by player vote.

Heygood, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker from Chester, Pa., paced Purdue with 114 tackles (65 solo, 49 assists), the most by a Boilermaker since Niko Koutouvides had 121 during the 2002 season. Heygood ranked fourth in the Big Ten with an average of 9.5 tackles per game. He recorded six tackles for loss and three pass breakups along with one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Heygood was the leader of a Purdue unit that ranked fourth in the Big Ten in total defense (317.5 yards) and fifth in scoring defense (24.5 points) in conference games.

Other awards presented were the Verle H. Campbell Scout Team awards to freshman running back George Brigandi and freshman defensive end Robert Maci, the Noble E. Kizer Award (top grade-point average for the past two semesters) to junior tight end Kyle Adams, and the Leonard Wilson Award (unselfishness and dedication) to fifth-year defensive tackle Ryan Baker and fifth-year safety Frank Duong. Baker also received the Kiwanis Citizenship Award and was voted by his teammates as the football squad's recipient of the Guy "Red" Mackey Award (exemplifying the overall success of the university's intercollegiate athletics programs).

In addition, the Pop Doan awards (for the top performances against Indiana) were presented to fifth-year quarterback Curtis Painter (offense), fifth-year defensive back Torri Williams (defense) and junior kick returner Aaron Valentin (special teams). The Boilermakers recaptured the Old Oaken Bucket with a 62-10 victory over the Hoosiers at Ross-Ade Stadium last Saturday.

The Boilermakers posted a 4-8 record during the 2008 season, their 12th and final campaign under retiring head coach Joe Tiller. The winningest coach in school history, Tiller compiled an 87-62 record at Purdue. His career record is 126-92-1 in 18 seasons. Danny Hope will take over as the Boilermakers' head coach Jan. 1, 2009.
