WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Sophomore defenders Ryan Kerrigan and Joe Holland are putting up impressive numbers not only on the field, but in the classroom as well. The two were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first team on Thursday. The selections are the first in each player's respective career and marked the 20th and 21st academic all-district honors for Purdue players in the 12 years under head coach Joe Tiller. Both players are now on the ballot for Academic All-America honors. Defensive end Kerrigan, a native of Muncie, Ind., has 3.65 cumulative grade point average in communications at Purdue. On the field, the first-year starter has racked up a team-high six sacks and is fourth on the team in total tackles with 40. Last weekend against Michigan, Kerrigan posted a career-high 10 tackles and three sacks in the Boilermakers' thrilling 48-42 win over the Wolverines. Holland, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., has yet to receive anything but an `A' in his major of movement and sports science at Purdue. The 4.0 student-athlete is third for the Boilermakers in total tackles this season (58), including a career-high 11 stops against Notre Dame, his mother and father's alma mater. Holland's numbers are even more impressive when considering he was moved from his natural safety position to linebacker just days before the season started. Kerrigan, Holland and the Boilermakers will head to East Lansing, Mich., this Saturday for a game against No. 18 Michigan State. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on the Big Ten Network.
