This Date in Boilermaker History
Purdue is 8-9-1 all-time on Nov. 3. On this date in 1979, the Boilermakers extended their streak to 19 consecutive victories over Iowa, clipping the Hawkeyes 20-14 in Iowa City. With much of the regular contributors missing due to injury, Jim Young's 15th-ranked Purdue squad leaned heavily on the shoulders of reserve tailback Ben McCall. The junior rushed for 96 yards and a score, while hauling in eight passes for 95 more yards and another touchdown. Trailing 14-7, McCall was on the receiving end of a Mark Herrmann pass from 17 yards out to tie the game in the second quarter and put the Boilermakers ahead for good on a six-yard TD run with 9:12 left in the third. Herrmann completed 21 of 38 passes for 236 yards, including a three-yard scoring pass to tight end Dave Young in the first quarter and the second quarter flip to McCall. The victory was the fourth of what would become a seven-game winning streak that concluded with a 41-21 victory over Georgia Tech in the Peach Bowl.
Neil Armstrong, a 1955 graduate of Purdue and the first man to walk on the moon, passed away on Aug. 25, 2012. After head coach Danny Hope shared Armstrong's exploits with the team, 5th-year wide receiver Tommie Thomas requested that the Boilermakers honor one of the most famous Purdue alumni. The Boilermakers will have the depicted sticker placed above the American flag on the back of their helmets for the remainder of the season.
Head Coach Danny Hope
Head coach Danny Hope is in his fourth season at the helm of the Boilermaker program and his 10th overall at Purdue. He sports a 54-48 career record, including his first postseason victory in last season's Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit.
Last Week's Quick Hits - at Minnesota
The Boilermakers converted nine of 18 third down opportunities and cashed in with touchdowns on all three trips inside Minnesota's red zone ... Purdue picked up 21 first downs in the game, 10 by rushing, 10 by passing and one via penalty ... The Boilermakers were flagged for a season-high eight penalties in the game, but the Golden Gophers were penalized just as much ... Akeem Shavers rushed for a personal season-high 78 yards on 11 carries, averaging 7.1 yards per carry ... Robert Marve, coming on in relief in the second half, tossed touchdown passes of 10 and 7 yards to Dolapo Macarthy and Antavian Edison, respectively ... It was Macarthy's first collegiate touchdown reception and the sixth of the season and 14th of his career for Edison ... Marve finished the game 11 of 19 for 97 yards ... Macarthy and Edison each hauled in a team-high five passes apiece for 53 and 51 yards, respectively ... Edison extended his streak to 29 consecutive games with a reception with his five catches ... Caleb TerBush connected with Brandon Cottom on a 1-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. It marked the sixth time in seven starts that TerBush has thrown at least one TD pass in a game this season and was the first touchdown reception of Cottom's career ... Rob Henry hooked up with true freshman Danny Anthrop on a 25-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter. It was Henry's second TD pass of the season and Anthrop's first collegiate scoring catch ... Defensively, Landon Feichter led all players in the game with eight tackles, including four solo stops. He also had a PBU ... Josh Johnson recorded seven tackles, six solo, and a PBU ... Jalani Phillips posted a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
We can't say it enough and Purdue is paying tribute to all current and former members of the military at Saturday's game against Penn State. Purdue University is grateful to everyone that has given of themselves to serve in our armed forces. Some of the highlights from Military Appreciation Day are:
"I Am an American: We Support Our Troops" t-shirts and hats are being sold. A portion of the proceeds will support the Entrepreneurial Bootcamp for Veterans (EBV) with Disabilities program at Purdue. The EBV program offers cutting edge, experiential training in entrepreneurship and small business management to post-9/11 soldiers, sailors, aviators and marines with disabilities resulting from their service to our country.
The American Flag carried by the football team onto the field during the introductions was flown on a Predator Drone over the Horn of Africa by Jonathan Gerber on Sept. 11, 2012.
KC-135s from Grissom Air Force Base will fly over the stadium before kickoff.
On the field, students in the Entrepreneurial Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities will arrive with the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band and be on the field for I Am an American and National Anthem.
The marching band will offer medley of music selected to honor the U.S. Armed Forces.
Military salute by Coach Hope and select football players.
Recognize military branches during the game.
American flags will replace some of the Big Ten pennants ringing the top rim of Ross-Ade Stadium.
Four Humvees, accompanied by personnel from the Indiana National Guard, Lafayette Armory, will be available to see and sit in before and after the game at various locations on campus.
Fraternities and sororities will hang sheet signs saluting veterans and the Student Veterans Organization.
Purple ribbons and lapel pins, each depicting Purdue and U.S. flags, will be distributed at the Purdue Student Government 12th Boiler Tailgate.
The Purdue Bell Tower will play a musical salute to veterans from Nov. 3 through Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
Knocking Them Down
With a team-high nine PBUs this season, senior cornerback Josh Johnson has bumped his career total to 24 which is good enough for a tie for 14th all-time at Purdue. Steve Jackson's all-time high of 35 from 1987-90 appears to be safe, but there is plenty of time left for Johnson to move up higher on the list.
Career Pass Breakups at Purdue
9 Derrick Kelson (1986-89) - 27
Jamel Coleman (1994-96) - 27
11 Fred Cooper (1972-74) - 26

Going the Distance
Akeem Hunt's 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Ohio State on Oct. 20 was the fifth of that distance in school history and the third return for a touchdown in Danny Hope's three-plus years as head coach.
100-Yard Kickoff Returns at Purdue
Jack Brown vs. Indiana 11/19/1938
Stan Brown vs. Indiana 11/21/1970

Jerome Brooks at Notre Dame 10/2/2004
Akeem Hunt at Ohio State 10/20/2012
In the Hunt
Shifty sophomore Akeem Hunt has proven that he has the ability to hit a home run. This season alone, Hunt has scored on a 56-yard rush against Eastern Michigan, an 81-yard run against Wisconsin and a 100-yard kickoff return at Ohio State. In his two-year career, Hunt is averaging 9.2 yards per carry with four touchdowns and 12.2 yards per reception with one score.
Not Too Shabby for a Walk-On
Landon Feichter's four interceptions this season are the most by an individual at Purdue since Terrell Vinson picked off five passes in 2007. The school record for interceptions in a season is seven, shared by Phil Mateja (1952) and Bill Kay (1979).
Ricardo Allen snapped the three-way tie for career interception returns for touchdowns record at Purdue he shared with Rod Woodson and Mike Rose with his fourth pick-six against Marshall on Sept. 29. Allen is now currently tied for second all-time in Big Ten Conference history with Indiana's Tim Wilbur (1978-82) and is one shy of equalling Wisconsin's Jamar Fletcher's league-high mark of five set from 1998-2000. The NCAA record is also five and shared by Tennessee's Jackie Walker (1969-71), San Jose State's Ken Thomas (1979-82), Cal's Deltha O'Neal 1996-99 and Oklahoma State's Darrent Williams (2001-04).
NCAA Career Leaderboard
Senior defensive tackle Kawann Short is fifth nationally amongst active FBS players in career tackles for loss (42.5) and tied for 17th in career sacks (16.5) ... Ricardo Allen's four career interception returns for touchdowns are tied for the most amongst active FBS players and his 205 interception return yards are 13th nationally ... Punter Cody Webster's 43.2 career average is 18th amongst all active FBS players ... Raheem Mostert is second among FBS players in kickoff return average at 31.4.
Still Breezing Along
With five catches for 51 yards and a touchdown last weekend at Minnesota, Antavian "Breeze" Edsion extended his streak to 29 consecutive games with at least one reception. During the streak, which dates to Oct. 9, 2010, Edison has caught 110 passes for 1,332 yards and 13 touchdowns. For the year, he leads Purdue with 38 catches for a team-high 432 yards and six touchdowns. He has also cracked the top 20 in Purdue history with 14 career touchdowns (tied for 13th with Bart Burrell 115) and 115 receptions (20th all-time). He needs merely 199 yards to make it on the top 20 list for career receiving yards.
Purdue's five sacks against Notre Dame on Sept. 8, equaled the season highs for each of the last four years. What's even more impressive about that figure is not how many, but whom Purdue has done it against.
Five Sacks in a Game the Last Five Years
2012 - at Notre Dame
2011 - vs. Ohio State
2010 - at Northwestern
2009 - vs. Ohio State and at Michigan
2008 - vs. Central Michigan
Speaking of Sacks
Fifth-year defensive tackle Kawann Short has lived up to the preseason hype. With a sack in the opener against Eastern Kentucky, a pair at Notre Dame on Sept. 8 and one against Marshall, Short's tally of 4.0 for the year in merely seven games is already more than half of his single season high in his career (6.5 in 2011). Short enters the game against Penn State tied for sixth in the Big Ten Conference and tied for 60th nationally in sacks per game. His start has pushed him from a tie for 15th on the Purdue career list into sole possession of ninth. Even more impressive is the fact that of the eight players with more career sacks at Purdue than Short, only Jeff Zgonina (t4th, 29.5-151) and Craig Terrill (7th, 20.5-116) played on the interior of the defensive line. The six others are listed as defensive ends or linebackers.
Career Sacks at Purdue
6. Anthony Spencer (2003-06) - 21.0-147
7. Craig Terrill (2000-03) - 20.5-116
8. Jim Schwantz (1988-91) - 18.0-168
9. Kawann Short (2009-) - 16.5-83
Going the Distance
Including three touchdown drives of 90 or more yards against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 15, the Boilers have proven they can make the long march down the field to the end zone this season. With 30 touchdown drives in the books, Purdue has posted 18 scoring drives of 70 or more yards and is averaging 66.9 yards on TD drives in 2012.
Including 392 yards on the ground against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 15, Purdue is 12-1 during the last four seasons when rushing for 200 or more yards.

Making the Most of It
Despite being a modest plus one on the turnover table this season (18 takeaways, 17 giveaways), the Boilermakers have made the most of quick change situations. Purdue is plus 41 in scoring off of turnovers, having scored nine touchdowns for 63 points on takeaways, while the defense has allowed only 29 points - three touchdowns (one missed extra point) and three field goals - after an offensive giveaway.
A Knack For It
All-America candidate Kawann Short blocked an extra point and a field goal in the opener against Eastern Kentucky, blocked a FG against Marshall and added yet another field goal block against Wisconsin to bring his career total to eight blocks (2 XPs, 6 FGs). Short, who helped Central High School in East Chicago, Ind., win an Indiana state basketball title his junior season and can still dunk at 315 pounds, snapped a three-way tie for the Purdue record he shared with Rosevelt Colvin and Bobby Iwuchukwu with his sixth career FG block against the Badgers.
The defensive side of the ball has seen tackle Kawann Short and cornerback Josh Johnson as a mainstays in the starting lineup. Short has started all 45 games in his Purdue career, and Johnson 31. Ricardo Allen saw his 31-game streak end at Ohio State on Oct. 20.
