WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue senior Vinny Sutherland has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, presented to the nation's outstanding receiver.
Heading into the 16th-ranked Boilermakers' home game with No. 12 Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 28, Sutherland tops the team with 45 receptions, 641 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns. He ranks second in the Big Ten and 10th nationally in receptions and tied for third in the Big Ten and 18th nationally in receiving yards.
The other nine semifinalists are Antonio Bryant of Pittsburgh, Rod Gardner of Clemson, Melvin Minnis of Florida State, Freddie Mitchell of UCLA, Quincy Morgan of Kansas State, Santana Moss of Miami (Fla.), Josh Reed of Louisiana State, Koren Robinson of North Carolina State and David Terrell of Michigan.
Three finalists will be selected Nov. 15, with the winner to be announced Dec. 7 at the Home Depot College Football Awards in Orlando, Fla.
The Biletnikoff Award was established in 1994 and is presented by the Tallahassee (Fla.) Quarterback Club. It is named after Fred Biletnikoff, the Oakland Raiders' career reciving leader and a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. He was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XI. An All-American at Florida State, Biletnikoff never experienced a losing season during his 14 seasons with the Raiders.
