WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Greater Lafayette and surrounding Tippecanoe County is decked out in resplendent autumn colors, and Purdue University is bustling with activity as Homecoming 2012 is set to get under way on campus.
Boilermaker spirit is blossoming, as witnessed by the Stuart & Branigin building across the Wabash River in Lafayette, which, as of Thursday afternoon, was flying a huge Purdue flag.
In July, Purdue athletics director Morgan Burke and head football coach Danny Hope joined Lafayette mayor Tony Roswarski and West Lafayette mayor John Dennis to announce "Boilermaker Revelry," asking fans and businesses to fly Purdue flags for all home football game weekends this season.
Saturday is the Boilermakers' Gold & Black Game, and fans are encouraged to wear either gold or black, depending on where their seats are located.
Fans with tickets in sections 101 through 105 - the primary area for visitor seating - are asked to wear gold, while the Purdue student sections, 106 through 115, wear black. Sections 116 through 124 will don gold and sections 125 through 134 go with black.
Specially designed t-shirts promoting the game are available in gold and black colors. They are available at Follett's and Purdue Pride.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the shirts go to the 12th Boiler Scholarship Fund in the John Purdue Club to help endow a Purdue football scholarship.
On Friday, fans are invited to attend the Boiler Bridge Walk, Boilermaker Night Train Parade and The Tip-Off Before the Kickoff at Mackey Arena for a football pep rally and basketball start-of-practice event.
