WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Purdue wide receiver Dorien Bryant has been listed a candidate for the 2006 Biletnikoff Award, presented to the nation's outstanding
wide receiver.
The Swedesboro, N.J., native is one of 50 nominated candidates for this award. Bryant joins five other Big Ten receivers on the list: Deon Butler of Penn State, Ted Ginn, Jr. of Ohio State, James Hardy of Indiana, Shaun Herbert of Northwester and Derrick Williams of Penn State.
After two games this season Bryant is leading the Big Ten and is tied for sixth nationally with 240 receiving yards. Also in conference rankings, he is second, behind teammate Kory Sheets, with 336 all-purpose yards, good for 10th most in the nation, as well as second in receptions with 14, placing him tied for 12th nationally. The wide receiver also has hauled in two touchdown receptions during the first two games.
Last season, Bryant appeared in all 11 games, leading Purdue with 80 receptions for 960 yards (12.0 average) and four touchdowns along with 21 kickoff returns for 500 yards and one touchdown. He was named second team Sophomore All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com as well as second team All-Big Ten by media and honorable mention by coaches.
The Biletnikoff Award, named after former Florida State and Oakland Raiders' wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff, will be presented in December at the ESPN College Football Awards Show at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The annual awards banquet is held in February in Tallahassee.
The 2005 winner was Oregon State's Mike Hass, who is currently on the Chicago Bear's practice squad.
