WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The Purdue offense showed plenty of big-play potential this afternoon and early evening during a 150-play scrimmage at Ross-Ade Stadium.
There were a total of 15 plays of more than 20 yards. Among the biggest:
Brandon Kirsch hit a streaking Ray Williams down the left sideline for a 75-yard touchdown.
Curtis Painter kept the ball on an option read and turned up field for a 66-yard score.
Kirsch and Dustin Keller connected for a 55-yard touchdown.
Kirsch hit a wide-open Charles Davis over the middle for a 43-yard touchdown and later hooked up with Williams for 43 yards.
Brandon Jones rambled 40 yards on a run.
Painter and Brian Hare connected for a 39-yard gain, and Painter and Grant Walker connected for 35 yards.
"We got a lot of good work accomplished today," ninth-year head coach Joe Tiller said. "Now we will begin to pare things down and look ahead to our first opponent (Akron on Sept. 10 in Ross-Ade)."
The scrimmage, which lasted roughly two and a half hours, featured the first-team offense against the first-team defense, the 2s vs. the 2s and the 3s vs. the 3s, but there was plenty of mixing and matching as coaches looked at countless combinations.
Among the plays were four punts and two field goals.
Kirsch finished the day 23 of 33 passing for 411 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions, while Painter was 10 of 15 for 139 yards and two interceptions - by defensive end Ray Edwards and cornerback Fabian Martin.
On the receiving end, Kyle Ingraham finished with seven catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, while Keller caught six balls for 96 yards and two scores. Davis had five receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Out of the backfield, Kory Sheets led the way with 164 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Fullback Anthony Heygood scored from eight yards out and totaled 39 yards on 12 carries. Jones and Jerod Void both rushed nine times, with Jones racking up 69 yards and Void 19.
David Ramirez and Joey Elliott both saw time at quarterback, with Ramirez completing 3 of 9 attempts for 53 yards and Elliott 0 for 3 passing.
Among the defensive highlights were two sacks by Edwards and one apiece by Bobby Iwuchukwu and Rob Ninkovich and pass breakups by Stanford Keglar and Ninkovich.
