WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The gold team defeated the black team 33-24 in the fall Kick Scrimmage on Saturday morning. Freshman J.D. Dellinger made 11 of 14 field goals for the gold, including a long of 48 yards.

The kick scrimmage opens with a kickoff, before the teams exchange punts back and forth, trying to find a way to get into field goal range. Then, they break into field goals, where both teams attempt five in a row, before returning to punts from the offense’s own 1-yardline.

Dellinger made his first seven field goals for the gold. Myles Homan was the black team’s kicker and finished the day making eight of 12 kicks, including a long of 44 yards. Dellinger’s makes were from 24, 27, 27, 29, 32, 36, 36, 37, 41, 41 and 48 yards, while his misses were from 39, 39 and 48 yards. Homan was good from 24, 27, 27, 29, 38, 39, 40 and 44 yards, while his misses were from 32, 35, 35 and 37 yards.

Joe Schopper punted for the black team, while Jake Herr and Dellinger punted for gold. Schopper finished the day with eight punts for 364 yards, an average of 45.5 yards per punt. He finished with three punts over 50 yards, including a long of 59 yards, and one touchback. Herr finished with eight punts for 320 yards, an average of 40.0 yards per punt, with a long of 59 yards, one touchback and one downed inside the 20. Dellinger punted once for 39 yards.

Da’Wan Hunte had the defensive highlight of the day when he came off the edge to block a Schopper punt. The ball deflected before bouncing up the middle of the field 25 yards to the black team’s 40-yardline. David Yancey also had a big play recovering a fumble for the gold team, which led to a Dellinger field goal.

The punt return team didn’t have many opportunities, but Jackson Anthrop, Cameron Posey and Jack Wegher all had punt returns, with the group’s long measuring 13 yards.
