WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Practice number six is in the books as the Boilermakers were back at the Bimel Practice Complex on Wednesday morning. Temperatures hovered near 90 degrees as the team was in full pads for the second day in a row.

Da’Wan Hunte has emerged as the top cornerback on the defense, after the departures of Frankie Williams and Anthony Brown to graduation and the NFL. Defensive backs coach Taver Johnson says that Hunte is a guy that very clearly learned from Williams and Brown and that his willingness to put in the work has made him the next man up. As to who will lineup on the opposite side of Hunte? That is yet to be determined.

“Not sure who is going to win the No. 2 corner spot,” Johnson said. “That’s why we are doing it by committee right now. We’re subbing guys trying to find out who it’s going to be. We don’t have an answer yet, but it’s a work in progress. We need someone to win that spot, for the most part. We always make sure that we’re doing what’s best for the team. So, you’d rather not have to play by committee, but instead create some depth at the position.”

The group has an ever-changing depth chart that can be different nearly every day. Tim Cason is a guy who has worked his way into the top spot momentarily, but he knows he can’t get comfortable. Cason likes the competitiveness among the group and feels that it pushes them to be better. He says they are a confident group of guys and that helps them when they step between the lines.

The Boilermakers will have their first two-a-day of camp Thursday. The first practice is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET, while the second will be at 3:30 p.m. at Bimel or Mollenkopf weather permitting, though all times and locations are subject to change without notification.
