I arrived in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon and met up with my ride as well as Colt McCoy and Bobby Reid (two other quarterback counselors). From there we took a trip to an "In And Out" fast food restaurant. I discovered that the "In And Out" restaurant was found mainly in the south, and this was my first time eating there. The day progressed with a golf match between Chase Daniel, Matt Stafford, Colt McCoy and I. We played golf, and after we lost about two dozen balls between the four of us, we finished. I would tell you who won, but we were playing so badly that we stopped keeping track. I blame my horrible play on the airlines because they lost my clubs and I had to play with a rental set. Stafford used the same excuse.
The next day we got to the camp site of Soka University. There I met the 12 high school campers as well as Mark Sanchez, the last of the college counselors. I had a chance to get to know Stafford at the Manning Passing Academy, so it was a great opportunity to hang out with him even more and develop friendships with the other college guys. Being such a small number, 18 with the counselors and high school campers combined, we all were able to work out everyday and throw. I was able to workout three days, going through footwork drills, accuracy drills, and various other quarterback drills. The small number also made it easy to get to know each camper a little bit.
On Tuesday, four of us counselors got a little free time and went to the Wild Rivers water park. I can't tell you the last time I had been to a water park. For anybody who thinks they are too old for a water park, think again because we all had a blast. We raced each other down the slides seeing who could finish first obviously, and who had the biggest wedgie from the waterslides (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.).
One of the sponsors of the Elite 11 was EA Sports, so Tuesday evening we had an NCAA '09 tourney between all the football players. I hadn't played a football game on Xbox in quite awhile so I wasn't expecting to do too well. I met my expectations. Summers kicked a 53-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game, and then missed a 20- yard field goal in overtime to lose the game. I'm guessing the miss was due to user error.
At night, the counselors were able to get a little free time and often took that as an opportunity to get some non-camp food. The last day of workouts Carson Palmer came and worked out with us, as well as his brother, Jordan Palmer. It was nice to meet some NFL quarterbacks as well. I had a blast at the camp and I'm glad I got the opportunity to participate in such an event. Between the Elite 11 and the Manning Passing Academy, I was able to meet a lot of people and develop great friendships with other quarterbacks around the country.
