WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame has announced that Purdue senior Ricardo Allen has been named to the watch list for the 2013 Jim Thorpe Award. Allen, who was named to the watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Award on Thursday, is one of four Boilermakers recognized on 2013 preseason watch lists, joining Gabe Holmes (John Mackey Award), Akeem Hunt (Paul Hornung Award) and Cody Webster (Ray Guy Award).
Allen, a cornerback from Daytona Beach, Fla., owns the Purdue career record with four interceptions returned for touchdowns. A three-year starter for the Boilermakers, Allen has recorded 200 career tackles, including 161 solo stops, with 10.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He has picked off seven career passes and broken up 11 others. He is a three-time second team All-Big Ten selection.
The Jim Thorpe Award was established in 1986 and is named after history's greatest all-around athlete. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
