Now Airing: Purdue On The Big Ten Network | WATCH: Coach Hope Talks About Marve
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Former University of Miami (Fla.) starting quarterback Robert Marve today announced he will transfer to Purdue. The redshirt sophomore, who will have to sit out the 2009 season due to NCAA transfer rules, will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2010.
"No. 1, we are really excited to have a player the caliber of Robert become a Boilermaker," first-year Purdue head coach Danny Hope said. "We became a better football program today.
"His recruitment the last couple of months was a major story, not just at Purdue but nationally. He could have gone to any of a number of the best schools in the country. I applaud his efforts throughout the process. He confided in his family and his high school coach and was very thorough in his decision making. He was respectful to us the entire time, and he conducted himself in a first-class manner."
Marve comes to the Boilermakers after playing one season at Miami. He took over as the starting signal-caller in the Hurricanes' second game of the 2008 season, made 11 consecutive starts and helped guide Miami to five straight wins from Oct. 11 to Nov. 13. He threw for 1,293 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 116 of 213 attempts (54.5 percent). The Hurricanes finished 7-6 overall, 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and appeared in the Emerald Bowl against California.
Marve redshirted as a true freshman in 2007 and was named the Hurricanes' Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year.
A highly touted prep performer, Marve was named Florida's Mr. Football and a member of the Parade All-America team as a senior at Plant High School in Tampa, Fla., after breaking future Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow's state records for passing yards (4,380) and touchdowns (48), as well as a 31-year old mark for completions (280).
Marve finished his three-year prep career with 7,096 yards passing and 69 touchdown passes, and guided Plant to the Class 4A state championship his senior season after completing 30 of 46 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns in the title game.
During his recruitment out of high school, Marve was rated the No. 8 quarterback in the nation and the No. 20 player in Florida by Rivals.com. Scout.com rated him the No. 14 quarterback, the No. 77 overall player in the nation and the No. 5 player in Florida, and SuperPrep had him ranked as the No. 11 collegiate quarterback prospect.
Marve was a member of the 2006 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100 and ranked the No. 5 player in Florida by the Orlando Sentinel, the No. 6 player by the St. Petersburg Times and the No. 14 player on the Tampa Tribune "Best of the South."
His father, Eugene Marve, was a linebacker for 12 years in the National Football League with the Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
