WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue football coach Danny Hope has announced the signing of junior college wide receiver Cortez Smith to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Boilermakers in 2009.
Smith currently attends Kilgore (Texas) College. Last season, he had 32 receptions for 536 yards (16.8 average) with five touchdowns. His average of 3.6 catches per game ranked 34th among all NJCAA players. Smith hauled in touchdown passes amassing 58, 42 and 31 yards.
"Cortez is a good athlete with good speed and size," Hope said. "He gives us another body at receiver, which we need. We lost eight or nine guys from last year's roster and now have added six, so our numbers are getting closer to where we would like them to be."
Smith attended Hooks High School in Hooks, Texas, where he was a teammate of Purdue defensive end Gerald Gooden.
