WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Playing with a modified scoring system, the offense held off a late rally by the defense to win the spring game 42-36 Saturday in Ross-Ade Stadium.

Both sides showed flashes of excellent play, with redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Sipe completing 14 of 24 passes for a game-high 180 yards and a touchdown. Early enrollee and true freshman quarterback Jack Plummer finished 15 of 22 for 157 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate spring game.

Redshirt freshman running back Alexander Horvath had 140 yards of total offense, rushing 15 times for 75 yards and hauling in five receptions for 65 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Benaiah Franklin caught seven passes for a game-high 116 yards, while teammates Isaac Zico (7-63), KeyRon Catlett (5-50) and Jess Trussell (3-24) caught touchdown passes.

Defensively, redshirt freshman cornerback Dedrick Mackey turned in a strong performance by picking off a pair of passes, including one in the end zone to thwart a potential touchdown and returning the other 38 yards for a score. Defensive linemen Semisi Fakasiieiki and Robert McWilliams III were each credited with a pair of sacks; and early enrollee Jeff Marks with another. Redshirt freshman corner Kenneth Major led all players with seven tackles on the day. In all, the defense broke up nine passes on the day.

The offense scored points using traditional scoring, while the defense was awarded two points for stops, three points for a three-and-out and on a fourth down stop; five points for a non-scoring turnover and seven points for a defensive score.

The game wrapped up the 15 practice sessions allotted during the spring. The Boilermakers open the 2018 season at home against Northwestern on Aug. 30.
