Day Nine News and Notes
The Boilermakers practiced outside for just the second time in nine spring practices.
Due to class schedules for some of the guys, the order of practice had to be rearranged and the middle part was reserved for the scrimmage sessions. The defense won all of the scrimmages on Monday, including getting a fumble recovery by Bruce Gaston on a bad snap when the offense was trying to convert on third-and-goal inside the five.
Defensive standouts from the scrimmages included a number of big hits from linebackers Dwayne Beckford and Joe Holland, a tackle for loss by Will Lucas and a combined sack from a defensive line that featured Ryan Isaac, LaSalle Cooks, Rashard Frazier and Eric Mebane. Cooks and Mebane followed up the team sack with another sack on the following play.
While not playing very sharp, the offense did have some big plays including a 41-yard run by Rob Henry, a 25-yard reception by Waynelle Gravesande on a pass from Caleb TerBush, a pair of 15-yard receptions by Justin Siller on passes from Henry and some tough running by both Akeem Shavers and Gavin Robert.
The Boilermakers will practice in shorts on Wednesday, saving themselves physically in preparation for the annual "Steak and Beans Scrimmage" planned for Friday.
