WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Practice No. 2 of the Jeff Brohm era is in the books as the Boilermakers worked out for two hours inside Mollenkopf on Wednesday. The team was in just helmets for the last time, as it will come out in full pads Friday for practice No. 3.

The coaches continue to install their systems on both sides of the ball. The goal remains to find what works best schematically, while remaining multiple in the sets, as well as identifying the best 11 players offensively and defensively. The defense is predicated on linebackers and Purdue has a handful with extensive experience, including Markus Bailey, Danny Ezechukwu and Ja’Whaun Bentley. The group also added transfer T.J. McCollum from Western Kentucky.

Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Nick Holt likes the intensity from the group, but admits there is a long way to go to get the defense where it needs to be. Holt and Brohm agreed that Friday’s practice in full pads will give the staff a better opportunity to gauge the team.

“I think the efforts good. I like the effort and I like the kids’ attitudes,” Holt said. “They’re willing to learn and work hard, but we have a long, long way to go. We’ll learn more when they put the pads on and more practices because it’s so early.”

Ezechukwu and the defense enter the third year in a row under a new defensive coordinator. Despite the changes, the senior linebacker feels comfortable because Holt is not asking the defense to do anything they haven’t done before. Ezechukwu wants to see the defense learn and follow assignments and then the rest will fall into place.

“You get to play fast in this defense. That’s what makes it super fun to play in. It’s a linebacker friendly system that allows us to have control and take care of the defense. Coach Holt is putting us in a variety of different situations and we just need to stay true and adapt and things will take care of themselves.”
