WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Three student-athletes have enrolled at Purdue this semester and will play football for the Boilermakers. They will take part in winter conditioning and spring practice.

The three newest Boilermakers are linebacker Dwayne Beckford, linebacker Antwon Higgs and running back Al-Terek McBurse.

Beckford, 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, from Irvington, N.J., signed with the Boilermakers in February of 2008 but did not enroll. He subsequently returned home for the fall semester. A year ago, he was ranked the No. 24 player in New Jersey by Rivals.com. Beckford earned first-team all-state honors as a senior at Irvington High School after recording 104 tackles, including 17 sacks, to go with four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He was first team all-conference, all-region and all-area as junior after recording 85 tackles, including 10 sacks, and two fumble recoveries for the state championship runner-up team. His coach was Darnell Grant, and Beckford was a teammate of Purdue wide receiver Waynelle Gravesande.

 

 

Higgs, 6-foot-3, 248 pounds, from Pompano Beach, Fla., joins the Boilermakers as an early graduate from Pompano Beach High School. He is a three-star prospect and ranked the No. 35 weakside defensive end in the nation by Rivals.com. As a senior, Higgs recorded 102 tackles with two interceptions. He had 21 receptions as a tight end. Higgs totaled 120 tackles, including six sacks, his junior year. His coach was Greg McGirt.

McBurse, 6-feet, 190 pounds, from Winter Springs, Fla., joins the Boilermakers as an early graduate from Winter Springs High School. He is a four-star prospect and ranked the No. 23 running back in the nation by Rivals.com. As a senior, McBurse rushed for a Seminole County-record 2,238 yards with 23 touchdowns while averaging more than 12 yards per carry. He rushed for 1,384 yards and nine touchdowns his junior year. His coach was Mike Kintz.
