WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue junior offensive tackle Kelly Butler has announced that he will forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility and make himself available for the 2004 NFL Draft.

Kelly Butler

"I feel that the time is right to enter the draft," Butler said. "I've had a great time at Purdue, but I believe it is in my best interest to move forward with my football career."

The 6-foot-8, 320-pound Butler, from Grand Rapids, Mich., started all 38 games at right tackle over the last three seasons.

"Kelly has been a fixture for us on the offensive line," Purdue head coach Joe Tiller said. "He and I discussed his situation, so his decision is not a surprise. Certainly, we would like our players to play out their careers at Purdue, but he had a decision to make, and we respect it. We wish Kelly the best in his future on and off the field."

Other Football Tidbits:

* Graduate assistant coach Chad Brown has accepted a position as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Idaho. Brown, who played wide receiver for the Boilermakers from 1993 to 1996 and served as an undergraduate assistant in 1997, worked with the offense and special teams the last two seasons.

* Former Purdue quarterback Billy Dicken (1994-97) has signed with the Detroit Fury of the Arena Football League. Dicken is a three-year veteran of the AFL with the Chicago Rush. During that time, he completed 735 of 1,201 passes (61.2 percent) for 9,188 yards with 185 touchdowns and merely 44 interceptions. He led the Rush to the playoffs each of his three seasons. Detroit opens the 2004 season Feb. 5.

* Former running back Joey Harris (2001-02) is slated to play in the Las Vegas All-American Classic on Jan. 17. Harris did not play for the Boilermakers this season after being declared academically ineligible. He rushed for 1,115 yards a year ago. The All-American Classic, formerly known as the Paradise Bowl and played in St. George, Utah, will be televised by College Sports Television (CSTV) beginning at 3:30 p.m. EST. Harris will play for the East team.

* The Purdue coaches all are back in Orlando, Fla., site of last week's Capital One Bowl, for the annual American Football Coaches Association convention.
