Dr. K. Donald Shelbourne is in his 19th year as an orthopedic team physician for Purdue.

Shelbourne is in private practice as an orthopedic surgeon at Methodist Sports Medicine Center in Indianapolis. In addition, he was the team physician for the National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts for 15 years. Shelbourne presently is an orthopedic consultant for athletes and students at Purdue, Wabash College and high schools in central Indiana.

A native of Gary, Ind., Shelbourne graduated with a B.S. degree in chemistry from Wabash in 1972 and from Indiana University Medical School in 1976. He finished his orthopedic surgery residency at Indiana in 1981 and did a postgraduate sports medicine fellowship at Wisconsin from 1981-82. He has published more than 100 journal articles and recently received the Hughston Award for the most outstanding article published in the American Journal of Sportsmedicine for 1999. Since beginning his practice in 1982, he has focused on the research and treatment of athlete knee injuries.
