Dayne Runs for 244 Yards as Wisconsin Beats Purdue, 33-25

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin raced out to a 24-0 lead but had to hang on to defeat the Boilermakers before 78,330 home fans. The Badgers' freshman sensation Ron Dayne, who rushed for 244 yards, scored two of Wisconsin's first three TDs. John Hall booted a 44-yard field goal and Tony Simmons caught a 43-yard TD pass from Mike Samuel to account for the Badgers' early lead. Purdue's senior quarterback Rick Trefzger replaced John Reeves and had a career-day, completing 33-52 for 328 yards. UW led 24-10 at halftime. In the third quarter, Purdue pulled to 24-17 on Edwin Watson's two-yard run (he ended the game with 99 yards rushing on 21 attempts). Wisconsin answered with 10 straight points before Purdue got its final score with 5:38 remaining on a nine-yard TD pass to Willie Tillman from Trefzger. Purdue's final attempt to tie the game ended when Trefzger was intercepted on the Badgers' 10-yard line. Statistically, Purdue dominated in total yards (540-365), first downs (38-16), time of possession (36:19-23:41) and plays (104-52). However, four Purdue turnovers hurt (Wisconsin had only one).

GAME NOTES: Purdue set a school-record with 38 first downs...senior quarterback Rick Trefzger had career-highs in pass completions (33), attempts (328) and yards (328)...Purdue set a team school record for pass completions (36)...junior wideout Willie Tillman had career-highs for catches (12) and yards (159)...junior Shane Ryan made his first career field goal (27 yards) and PAT (2-2).
