Purdue Hands Minnesota First Defeat of the Season, 30-27

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Junior Kendall Matthews led Purdue to its second straight victory with his 131-yard rushing, two touchdown performance against previously unbeaten Minnesota. The recent high-scoring series got started quickly as Derrick Brown intercepted a Minnesota pass and raced 59 yards for a touchdown on the Gophers' fourth play from scrimmage. Minnesota scored 16 straight points after that, highlighted by Rodney Heath's 72-yard punt return, and led Purdue by eight points with 10:16 remaining in the half. The Boilermakers responded with a scoring explosion of their own. Brian Alford caught a 42-yard scoring strike from John Reeves and Matthews scored from eight and one yards out. The Gophers added a 25-yard field goal before half, but trailed 27-19 at the break. Junior Chris Arnce made his first field goal (37 yards) of the season in the third and Minnesota scored a TD in the fourth to provide the final scoring. As is so often the case, the winners won the rushing yardage battle, 196 to 71. However, the Gophers did have more total yards than Purdue (390 to 287).
