In 2005, local hero Bobby Riddell out of Harrison High school walked on to the Purdue men's basketball team and immediately became a crowd favorite.
In the 2006-07 season, Riddell appeared in 23 games and helped the Boilermakers reach the second round of the NCAA tournament where they fell to Florida 74-67 in the closest game of the tournament for the eventual champions.
This season, Riddell is looking forward to playing with the highly regarded freshman class.
"Its been going really good so far this season, I like all the new players and I'm just looking to play well when I get in and do the best I can. All the new guys work really hard and we definitely have more depth on the scoring end than we did last season," Riddell said.
Riddell, who is known as a sharpshooter said he tries to tailor his game after retired NBA player Steve Kerr who was known as a sniper from behind the three-point line.
"I guess I'd like to say to say I kind of model my game after Steve Kerr. He handled the ball pretty well and made the open shot when he had it," Riddell.
Riddell quickly established that he could make the open shot when given the opportunity. In his freshman season (2005-06) Riddell hit 45 percent of his attempts from three-point land and quickly garnered the cheers of the Mackey faithful every time he touched the ball.
Off the court Riddell has also been able to realize a childhood dream. As a kid he always ýthought it would be cool to see himself in a video game.
Not only did Riddell realize that dream but his character on EA Sports 2007 March Madness was an assassin from the outside.
"Oh I'm money on that game. I was loving it," Riddell said. "It was awesome to see ýmyself with that three-point icon. I'm not sure how good I'll be on there this year after last season though," Riddell said.
Riddell isn't the only shooter in the family. His sister Katie Riddell helped lead Lafayette Central Catholic to the 2006 Class A state championship and hit 3-of-3 from downtown to end up with 16 points in the state final. When asked who would win in a three-point shooting contest however Bobby says it would be no contest.
ý"We used to shoot around together but I got her," Riddell said. "I think big bro has always had her number."
As Purdue plays against Loyola tonight, Riddell can't help but think about where the Boilermakers were during Thanksgiving last season.
"I wish we were in Maui right now. That was a great tournament to be a part of. All the ýgood teams, the scenery, the beaches it was great," Riddell said.
This season one thing is for certain. Riddell will still get calls from the Mackey crowd waiting to explode every time he puts up a shot so they can chant his nickname, Bobby Buckets.
