WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Purdue men's basketball coach Gene Keady announced the signing of four players to National Letters of Intent during the NCAA's early-signing period on Tuesday.
The Boilermakers' class includes guard Xavier Price from Belleville West High School in O'Fallon, Ill., Bryant Dillon from Southwestern Illinois College, Carl Landry from Vincennes University ýand Gary Ware from Dodge City Junior College.
Keady feels the quartet will provide instant help along the frontline and add depth to an already talented backcourt.
"This class addresses our post needs for next season and also gives us two extremely talented wing players," said Keady. "This should be a fun group to coach because they are all tough kids, and that will help them in our system. They are a lot like our kids that we have right now. They're all from the Midwest and were very excited about coming here. They all come from good homes and are people that will fit into the Purdue system."
The class received high marks from several recruiting services. Hoopscooponline.com ranks the class as No. 11, Van Coleman puts it as 14th, Bob Gibbons at 15th and ESPN.com at No. 16. All four rank the class among the best in the Big Ten.
Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Hometown (School/High School)
Bryant Dillon G 6-6 178 Indianapolis, Ind. (Southwestern Illinois/Arsenal Tech)
Carl Landry F 6-7 235 Milwaukee, Wis. (Vincennes/Vincent)
Xavier Price G 6-3 200 O'Fallon, Ill. (Belleville West)
Gary Ware F 6-9 215 Detroit, Mich. (Dodge City Junior College/Finney)
Bryant Dillon
Dillon averaged eight points, seven rebounds and three assists per game as a freshman. In two games as a sophomore, he averaged 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Dillon missed the remainder of last season after suffering a knee injury.
Dillon is rated the fourth-best junior college shooting guard by The Sporting News and the sixth-best junior college wing player by Lindy's magazine. Hoopmasters.com has ranked Dillon as the 30th-best ýoverall junior college prospect in the country.
"Bryant's probably the tallest point guard we've signed here, so he will give us another dimension we've not had before," said Keady. "I like his versatility. He can play a one, two or three and then, hopefully play more of the point guard spot once Brandon McKnight graduates."
Carl Landry
Landry averaged 14 points, 7.4 rebounds and shot 68.5 percent from the field in his freshman season at Vincennes. He is rated as a four-star recruit by rivals.com and the fifth-best overall junior college player by hoopmasters.com. Landry is ranked as the No. 10 junior college power forward in the nation by Lindy's magazine and the second-best junior college power forward by The Sporting News.
"I can see Carl being a lot like Todd Mitchell," said Keady. "He scores around the basket more and really finishes well underneath. That's something we've lacked the last couple of seasons. Carl is the ýmore versatile of the two post guys, because he can jump out and knock down the jumper."
Xavier Price
Price averaged 18.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game at O'Fallon High School as a junior. He'll play his senior season at Belleville West. A three-star recruit by rivals.com, Price was rated at the 45th-best recruit by USA Today. He is ranked as the 67-best recruit by hoopscooponline.com and the 136th best recruit by rivals.com.
"Xavier is probably the toughest kid we've signed since Todd Foster," said Keady. "He loves to play defense and is very hard-nosed. He worked on his shooting a lot, and that had been his weakness. By the end of last summer, he had really improved that a great deal, so his offense is underrated."
Gary Ware
Ware averaged 12 points and eight rebounds a game as a freshman at Dodge City. A three-star recruit by rivals.com, Ware is ranked as the eighth-best junior college power forward by Lindy's magazine. Ware is ranked as the 40th-best junior college player by hoopmasters.com.
"Gary is one of the most explosive players we've signed the last few years," said Keady. "He mostly plays around the basket, but he can occasionally go outside and make some things happen."
