Nov. 11, 2009

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Head coach Matt Painter and the Purdue men's basketball staff put the official seal on one of the nation's top recruiting classes on Wednesday, as a highly-praised quartet signed National Letters of Intent to begin competing for the Boilermakers in the 2010-11 season.

Travis Carroll, Donnie Hale, Anthony Johnson and Terone Johnson comprise a class that is regarded as the No. 14 haul in the nation by MaxPreps, 16th by Rivals.com and 20th by ESPN.com.

"I think it's a great class for our needs," Painter said. "We were able to add two big guys who are totally different from each other. One is a true post, and the other is guy who can play inside or out. Those two guys will complement each other well. We also signed two very talented guards. Addressing the need to replace Keaton Grant and Chris Kramer in our backcourt was a must, and we feel like we did that by getting two all-around guards who can play at both ends of the court."

In addition to signing a highly sought-after talent from Chicago in Anthony Johnson, the Purdue staff also once again asserted its formidable in-state recruiting prowess, as Carroll, Hale and Terone Johnson are each Indiana products and were teammates on the Indiana Junior All-Stars in 2009.

"I've always said that it's important for us to recruit our backyard, and recruit kids hard in the state of Indiana and neighboring states," Painter said. "We feel that we have enough players in this area to help us compete in the Big Ten, and we're going to continue to target them with our recruiting efforts."

Purdue's 2009 Signing Class

Travis Carroll F 6-9 219 Danville, Ind. (Danville Community)
Donnie Hale F 6-8 210 New Albany, Ind. (New Albany)
Anthony Johnson G 6-2 180 Chicago, Ill. (Whitney Young)
Terone Johnson G 6-2 190 Indianapolis, Ind. (North Central)

Travis Carroll
Carroll averaged 22.1 points, 13.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game as a junior to lead Danville to a No. 5 final ranking in Class 3A. Along with the size that he will add to the Purdue lineup, Carroll has excellent footwork and can score with either a variety of post moves or a dependable perimeter game.

"Travis Carroll is a very good fundamental basketball player," Painter said. "He's a throwback guy, a true post. He's a good passer out of the post, he's got good post moves and he's always rebounded the basketball. We're excited about his upside. He'll be a consistent player who can score the basketball inside, and he's a guy that can make perimeter shots. He embraces the physical nature of the game, and he plays very hard."

  • Led Danville to a sectional championship as a sophomore
  • Also considered Butler, Indiana and Iowa
  • Coached by Bryan Barber at Danville Community High School, and Cory Downs on the Spiece Downs AAU team

"Travis is a very good basketball player, but he's a better person," Barber said. "He's the ultimate teammate, and he makes the guys around him better. He's put in the work to improve himself both on and off the court. Our entire community is excited for the opportunity Travis has at Purdue. The job that Coach Painter and his staff have done there is amazing, and we couldn't be sending him to a better place."

"Travis has great size and skill, and he's a hard-working and smart player" Todd Hensley, director of Spiece basketball, said. "He's an old-school workhorse. He's been a great piece of our organization, and I couldn't be happier for him."

"Travis is a very hard worker and a great kid," Downs said. "He's very crafty on the offensive end. He's athletic, and he does so many things that can alter shots on the defensive end of the floor."

Donnie Hale
Hale averaged 19.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per contest as a junior to lead New Albany to a 23-1 record, a No. 2 final state ranking and a sectional title. A superior athlete with the ability to block shots and rebound in traffic, Hale is known for his high motor and ability to run the floor with ease.

"Donnie Hale is probably a face-up forward in college," Painter said. "He can play inside or outside, he can shoot the ball from three-point range, he can drive the ball. He's had to post up a lot for his high school team, so we're getting a very versatile player. His strengths lie in running the court and causing matchup problems, as well as being a shot blocker on the defensive end. As he continues to develop physically, his game will continue to grow."

  • Propelled New Albany to sectional and regional titles as a sophomore, and a sectional championship as a freshman
  • Also considered Xavier
  • Coached by Jim Shannon at New Albany High School and Cory Downs on the Spiece Downs AAU team

"Donnie is a competitor, and he plays to win," Shannon said. "We've had a tremendous run with Donnie in the lineup, and he's been a huge part of that. He likes to go out and give you everything he's got. He's also applied himself in the classroom, and that was a big part of him being accepted to Purdue. He's such a hard worker that he'll continue to grow on and off the court, and Purdue is getting a quality player and person."

"Like Travis Carroll, Donnie is a great kid who comes from a great family," Hensley said. "I've gotten to know Donnie and his family over the years, and I'm very proud of what he's been able to accomplish. He's a hard worker who will run the floor and do a lot of the little things to help Purdue win."

"The sky is the limit for Donnie," Downs said. "He doesn't realize how much potential he has, and he couples that with a great work ethic. Boilermaker fans will be able to get excited about the effort that Donnie Hale will put forth on a nightly basis."

Anthony Johnson
Anthony Johnson averaged nearly nine points and four assists per game as a junior at Whitney Young. He is a threat to score from beyond the arc, but can also penetrate and has a soft touch around the rim. His athleticism and long arms also enable Johnson to be a strong on-ball defender.

"The first thing you talk about with Anthony is his ability to score," Painter said. "He puts the ball in the basket. There are a lot of things that go on during the course of a game, but there will always be a place for a guy like Anthony Johnson, who can make plays and make shots. The thing about him that jumped out at me the most is his ability to rebound. Any time you get a guard who can score the basketball and also rebound the position, that's definitely going to help you."

  • Graded an 89 and ranked as the No. 57 shooting guard in his class by ESPN
  • An ESPNU Super 60 member following his sophomore year
  • Given a four-star rating, ranked as the No. 100 overall recruit and ranked as the No. 25 shooting guard in his class by Rivals.com

  • Ranked as the No. 2 recruit in the state of Illinois in the Class of 2010
  • An Illinois large school all-state selection in both 2008 and 2009
  • Led Whitney Young to a 24-9 record and an Illinois big school state championship as a junior
  • Also considered Ohio State, Marquette and Illinois
  • Coached by Tyrone Slaughter at Whitney Young High School

"Anthony is a great young man, a leader and a winner," Slaughter said. "He's known for his ability to score baskets, but he's also worked hard to improve on the defensive end. Anthony is a fierce competitor, and that's what it takes to play at an institution like Purdue that has a tradition of success. The young man knows how to win, and will help continue what's already been started there."

Terone Johnson
Terone Johnson averaged 19.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game as a junior, while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 46 percent from beyond the arc, to lead North Central to a 23-2 record and No. 4 final state ranking. An aggressive scorer who can play the point or run on the wing, Johnson plays physically and uses his strength on both ends of the floor.

"Terone Johnson has developed into a good all-around guard," Painter said. "His teams have just simply won games, be it in open gym, AAU or high school. He's consistently won, and that's the thing that's impressed me the most - his ability to compete, night in and night out. He's a very good scorer who can break defenders down with his dribble or shoot the three, and he's got a big, physical body that will help him guard a number of different positions. He's going to be able to make plays for us."

  • Graded a 92 and ranked as the No. 32 shooting guard in his class by ESPN

  • Also considered Butler and Cincinnati
  • Coached by Doug Mitchell at North Central High School and Matt Green on the Eric Gordon All-Stars AAU team

"With Terone, it all starts with his character," Mitchell said. "He's a classy person, which carries over to the basketball court. He's a vicious competitor who plays by the rules. He's got an old-school style to his game, and he's not about flair. He wants to get the job done, and he'll take exactly what you give him without forcing anything. Coach Painter did a tremendous job of recruiting him, and I think they share some of the same outlooks on life: treat people fair, work hard and be honest."

"Terone has the ability to be an impact player for the Boilermakers," Green said. "He's very polished on the offensive end of the floor. It will take some time to get used to the defensive style of play at Purdue, but he picks things up very quickly and he's got a great basketball IQ. More than anything, he's a great competitor with a will to win."

Purdue will open the 112th season of Boilermaker basketball on Friday when it plays host to Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. ET at Mackey Arena. For tickets, call (800) 49-SPORT or log on to purduesports.com.
