Preseason AP Top 25

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's basketball team is ranked No. 20 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll released earlier today.

The Boilermakers garnered 362 votes to sit firmly in 20th place, 111 points behind 19th-ranked Northwestern and 22 points ahead of No. 21-ranked UCLA (340 points). Purdue is one of four Big Ten teams ranked, joining Michigan State (2nd), Minnesota (15th) and Northwestern (19th). Wisconsin, Maryland and Michigan are also receiving votes.

Among top-25 teams, Purdue will face Michigan State (No. 2), Minnesota (No. 15), Louisville (No. 16) and Northwestern (No. 19), with the possibility of also facing Arizona (No. 3) and Villanova (No. 6) in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis. Among teams receiving votes, Purdue will face Wisconsin (14 pts.), Butler (13 pts.), Maryland (7 pts.), Michigan (6 pts.) and possibly SMU (3 pts.).

It marks the 39th straight week that Purdue has been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, currently the sixth-longest streak in the country. The Boilermakers had been seventh, but Virginia was not ranked for the first time in 65 polls to fall off the list.

Purdue has been ranked in the preseason top 25 poll in three straight seasons, only the third time in school history that has happened. The other occurrences came in the 2008-09 (11th), 2009-10 (7th) and 2010-11 (14th) and the 1997-98 (9th), 1998-99 (16th) and 1999-00 (23rd) preseason polls.

Purdue hosts Carroll College (Mont.) Wednesday at Mackey Arena at 7 p.m. ET, in its final exhibition contest. The season opener is Nov. 10, against SIU Edwardsville, tipping at 8 p.m. ET.

Purdue is the defending Big Ten champion, posting a 27-8 record a year ago while advancing to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. This year's squad returns six of its top seven scorers, including four seniors that have been a part of 74 wins over the last three years while boasting the best home record in the Big Ten during that span.
