WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's basketball assistant coach Cuonzo Martin has been promoted to associate head coach.

"Coach Martin is very deserving of this promotion," head coach Matt Painter said. "I am very grateful to have someone of his caliber on our staff. He has excelled in all facets of coaching our program. He is going to be an excellent head coach in the near future."

Hired in the summer of 2000 by Gene Keady, Martin is entering his eighth year with the program.

"I'm very fortunate and flattered to be a part of such a great staff," said Martin. "I feel honored to work at Purdue and continue to develop young men in our basketball program."

Martin played at Purdue from 1991 to 1995. He currently ranks 11th on Purdue's all-time scoring list with 1,666 points, good enough for a 13.1 average in his 127 games. During Martin's four years, Purdue was 90-37, including 54-12 the last two years, with a pair of conference titles.

Martin played professional basketball for four years, with brief NBA appearances with the Milwaukee Bucks twice and Vancouver Grizzlies once.
