WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The Purdue men's basketball program will host its annual coaches clinic on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Mackey Arena. This year's clinic will emphasize coaching strategies that impact teams' performance on the defensive end of the floor, a staple of Boilermaker basketball.
The Purdue Basketball Clinic will also feature special guest PJ Carlesimo, a veteran of more than 35 years on the professional and college sidelines. Carlesimo began his head coaching career at New Hampshire College before moving to Wagner and Seton Hall, where he led the Pirates to an appearance in the 1989 NCAA Championship game. In addition to his head coaching success on the collegiate level, Carlesimo also served as floor general of the NBA's Golden State Warriors, Portland Trailblazers and Oklahoma City Thunder, and was an assistant coach for the United States' Olympic gold medal-winning team in 1992, commonly known as the "Dream Team."
"We're thrilled to have someone as renowned as Coach Carlesimo speak at our clinic," Purdue head coach Matt Painter said. "He's a guy who has coached at every level and been around the game for a long time. He can talk about the game on the college level and the professional level, as well as his experiences with USA Basketball and the Olympics. It should be a great day to soak up some of his basketball knowledge."
Carlesimo will speak during the first of the clinic's two sessions, lecturing on the principles of building a man-to-man defense. Members of the Purdue coaching staff will take the floor during the second session to speak about playing defense at both the college and professional levels. Following the clinic, participating coaches will be invited to watch the Boilermakers practice from noon-3 p.m. on Keady Court.
"We always look forward to our coaches clinic," Painter said. "We see a lot of familiar faces each year and always meet new people who want to share ideas about the game of basketball. I think a coach at any level will enjoy our clinic and will benefit from talking to the numerous other coaches who attend."
The cost of the clinic is $25 per coach, or $55 for a staff of three or more. Please click
