Community Hoops Dedication in Valpo
Sept. 5, 2017

VALPARAISO, Ind. - A dedication ceremony and launch will take place Thursday, Sept. 7, for the fourth completed restoration project of the Community Hoops program, sponsored by partners Purdue Athletics and Managed Health Services. This program is restoring and rebuilding basketball courts in communities across Indiana.

Spearheaded by Purdue basketball alum Brian Cardinal, the court dedication at Tower Park in Valparaiso will begin at approximately 2 p.m. ET. Cardinal, former Purdue star and Valparaiso native Robbie Hummel and head coach Matt Painter will be in attendance.

In addition, former Notre Dame pitcher and current San Francisco Giant Jeff Samardzija will celebrate the beginning of Phase II of the Tower Park renovation with the groundbreaking for Samardzija Field at 4 p.m. ET.

Renovation of Tower Park is getting a jump start with a lead gift from Managed Health Systems and Purdue Cardinal Community Hoops to renovate a signature basketball court at the neighborhood park at Franklin Street and Evans Avenue. The Valpo Parks Department and the Valpo Parks Foundation are proud to announce that the gift is the first in a series of public private partnerships that will be announced this week.

The Tower Park court project includes new backboards, seating, resurfacing the court and painting the court to look like the basketball floor in Mackey Arena on Purdue's campus. Cardinal, now a member of the Boilermaker athletic staff, selected Valparaiso for the next Community Hoops project because it is Hummel's hometown to another Purdue hoops all-time great and VHS basketball hero, Robbie Hummel.

Community Hoops is designed to connect Purdue with the youth of the Valparaiso area, Indiana and beyond by restoring and/or building basketball courts. Managed Health Systems, Purdue Trademarks and Licensing, Purdue Sports Properties and Cardinal put together a unique partnership, utilizing needs within the community.

"This lead gift is symbolic of how we are able to accomplish great things for our residents and guests," Valpo Parks Director John Seibert said. "The quality of our facilities have often been made possible by these public and private partnerships. We are very thankful to Brian, Robbie, Managed Health Systems and the Community Hoops program at Purdue for their gift."

This is the first of many volunteer and private sector announcements and opportunities that will be part of the Valpo Park Foundation's Leader's Giving Back Campaign that will support renovation of sports facilities, neighborhood parks and other special venues.

Dr. Jerry Rodenbarger and Dr. Robert Behrend are co-chairing the Leaders Giving Back campaign for the Tower Park Renovation. The Foundation has a variety of ways for the public to be involved in the project.
