WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A preseason visit from the Harlem Globetrotters, a game at Xavier, a trip to Las Vegas to face Arizona State, a showdown with Louisville and a non-conference battle with Indiana in the RCA Dome highlight the 2002-03 Purdue men's basketball schedule.
After two exhibition games, including one against the Harlem Globetrotters on Nov. 5 in Mackey Arena and one against Marathon Oil on Nov. 15, the Boilermakers will play 27 games and conclude the schedule with the Big Ten Tournament from March 13 to 16 in Chicago, Ill.
Gene Keady, who is in his 23rd season as head coach of the Boilermakers, says the schedule is challenging.
"I think it's a great schedule for the team we have," said Keady. "We get tested very early with games against Xavier and Louisville. The non-conference game against Indiana will be exciting, and then you have the normal challenges of the conference season."
Purdue opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 22 against Miami (Ohio) in Mackey Arena at 9 p.m. The game is the night before the Old-Oaken Bucket game in Ross-Ade Stadium.
The Boilermakers' lone road game of the non-conference season is a trip to Xavier on Dec. 3.
For the third season in a row, the Boilermakers will be playing in the Wooden Tradition on Nov. 30 in Indianapolis. Purdue faces Louisville in Conseco Fieldhouse.
On Dec. 14, the Boilermakers face Indiana in the RCA Dome as part of a double-header with the women's team. The Indiana and Purdue women's teams will play first and the men's teams will play the nightcap.
The Boilermakers will head to Las Vegas for the second year in a row and face Arizona State in the Las Vegas Showdown on Dec. 21 on ESPN2.
The Boilermakers will host Middle Tennessee State in the first round of the 12th annual Boilermaker Invitational on Dec. 6. The winner will face either IUPUI or San Diego on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.
Rounding out the non-conference portion of the schedule will be home games against Belmont (Dec. 18), Valparaiso (Dec. 28), Colorado State (Dec. 30) and Montana (Jan. 4).
Four of the first six Big Ten games will be at home as the Boilermakers open the conference season in Mackey Arena against Northwestern on Jan. 11. ESPN will visit Mackey Arena on Jan. 14 as the Boilermakers play host to Michigan State.
The Boilermakers will face each Big Ten school during conference season on the road except Indiana and Wisconsin and each team at home except Iowa and Minnesota.
Indiana will visit Mackey Arena for the first time in two years on Jan. 25. Purdue concludes the regular season with a game at Michigan on March 8 at 12:17 p.m.
