Purdue Breezes Past Albacete

ALBACETE, Spain -- Caleb Swanigan scored 16 points to lead five Boilermakers in double figures as Purdue topped Albacete 88-67 in its second game of its Spanish tour.

The Boilermakers were playing on their second straight day, driving almost five hours via bus before tip. They showed no signs of travel fatigue jumping out to a 27-15 first-quarter lead and a 55-35 halftime advantage. Purdue led 67-53 after three quarters.

The story of the game early on was the Boilermakers’ shooting. Purdue shot 56.8 percent from the field, including 9-of-18 (.500) from 3-point range in surging to its 20-point halftime cushion. The Boilermakers cooled down in the second after tinkering with lineups, but still shot just under 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from long distance.

For the game, Purdue was 32-of-66 (.485) from the field, 12-of-29 (.414) from 3-point range and 12-of-17 (.706) from the free throw line. The two teams both had 43 rebounds, while Purdue cut its turnovers from 25 to 16, seven of which were traveling calls that would not be called in NCAA play.

Purdue also had 25 assists on 32 made field goals and grabbed 16 more steals after having 19 on Wednesday.

Swanigan led the Boilermakers for the second straight game with 16 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Vincent Edwards tallied 15 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals. Carsen Edwards added 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, and P.J. Thompson scored 13 points with five assists while making 3-of-4 from long distance. Isaac Haas was the last Boilermaker in double figures with 11 points and four rebounds.

Purdue will finish its trip in Valencia and Barcelona with games against the Barcelona Region All-Stars (Sunday) and the European Basketball Academy (Monday) before returning home next Wednesday.
