Final Box Score

MADRID, Spain -- Purdue outscored Euro Colegio Casvi 37-16 over the last 13 minutes of the game to erase a 12-point deficit and defeat ECC 80-71 in the Boiermakers’ first exhibition game of its Spanish tour.

Purdue trailed 55-43 with three minutes left in the third quarter when the inside pair of Caleb Swanigan and Isaac Haas started to take over the game. The pair scored 21 of Purdue’s final 37 points, including 13 of Purdue’s 15 points in a six-minute span that trimmed ECC’s lead to two points at 61-59 with seven minutes to play.

The Boilermakers fell behind early as they struggled to adjust to FIBA rules and officiating. ECC, which defeated Arkansas earlier this week 81-75, led 12-4 just three minutes into the game, before freshman Carsen Edwards scored seven straight points (nine in the quarter) to end the frame as Purdue grabbed a 20-19 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

ECC would regain the lead at halftime, 46-41, before the Boilermakers’ rally overcome the host team. Purdue still trailed 65-64 with five minutes to play, before a 10-0 run fueled by Dakota Mathias’ defense leading to fast breaks, gave Purdue a 74-65 lead with just 1:51 to play.

Purdue shot 31-of-60 (.517) from the field, 5-of-20 (.250) from 3-point range and 13-of-21 (.619) from the free throw line. Purdue outrebounded ECC 41-36, grabbing 18 of the game’s last 23 rebounds. The Boilermakers had 25 assists against 23 turnovers, and grabbed 19 steals that resulted in 16 fast-break points.

Swanigan led the Boilermakers with 22 points, 11 rebounds and two assists on 8-of-12 shooting. Carsen Edwards finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Ryan Cline and Isaac Haas added 11 points each. Cline finished 3-of-5 from long distance and grabbed four steals while Haas grabbed eight rebounds. Dakota Mathias had four points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals in a fine all-around floor game.

Purdue will play game two on its four-game tour Thursday against Albacete Basketball. Tip is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
