Gold Rallies in Second Half to Top Black in Alumni Game

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue Gold team overcame a 16-point second-half deficit by outscoring Purdue Black, 45-20, over the last 14 minutes to grab a 106-97 victory in the 2014 Purdue Men's Basketball Alumni Game.

Nearly 3,000 fans came out for the event, which featured eleven 1,000-point scorers and alums as far back as 1974 playing in the event. Several others as far back as 1944 also attended and were recognized during the contest.

Black sprinted out of the gates early, surging to a 19-11 lead just four minutes into the game on a Ryne Smith three-pointer. After the Gold cut the lead 26-24 on a Matt Kiefer lay-up with 10:27 left, Mike Robinson buried a pair of trifectas, followed by a three-pointer by Dru Anthrop and a dunk by Keaton Grant for an 11-0 run in just 51 seconds and a 37-24 advantage with 9:18 to play in the first half.

The Gold squad would trim the margin to 42-36 on a Charlie Lundstrom three-pointer with 6:50 remaining before halftime, but a steal by "The Custodian", Brian Cardinal and a layup by Grant pushed the lead back to 15 at 53-38 with 4:33 to play before the Black settled in for a 61-49 halftime advantage.

The Black team used the three-point shot to its advantage in the first half, making 14-of-34 behind the arc compared to just 4-of-16 for the Gold squad.

The Black team's lead would remain in double-digits until halfway through the second half, when the Gold team started its rally. Down 82-72 with 10:39 to play, Kenneth Lowe and Maynard Lewis, teammates in the early 2000s, teamed up for a 9-0 run between them and JaJuan Johnson gave the Gold team its first lead of the gameat 83-82 with a dunk with 8:04 to play.

A Grant lay-up would regain the lead at 87-85 for the Black squad, but back-to-back three-pointers by Lowe gave Gold a 91-87 lead with 4:08 to play and the closest the Gold team would get the rest of the way was three points, the last time coming at 100-97 on a Grant dunk with 2:51 to play.

The Gold team shot 41-of-84 (.488) for the contest, including 23-of-40 (.575) from the field in the second half. Gold was 10-of-30 (.333) from three-point range and outrebounded the Black squad, 65-43, and was credited with 19 turnovers.

The Black team shot 36-of-92 (.391) from the field, including 20-of-62 (.323) from long distance. Nine different players his trifectas and the Black team was credited with 11 assists.

Gold was led by the Alumni Game MVP (fan vote) Kenneth Lowe, with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting with eight rebounds, one assist and one steal. David Teague added 16 points and five rebounds, JaJuan Johnson had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Mark Wohlford contributed 12 points and Brandon Brantley tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Lewis Jackson also provided a sparkplug with six points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Black team was led by Chris Kramer, who flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Keaton Grant had 14 points and five steals, while D.J. Byrd and Mike Robinson had 13 and 11 points, respectively.
