WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's basketball team will square off with Southern Illinois on Friday, Nov. 26, as part of the weekend lineup for the fifth-annual Chicago Invitational Challenge, released on Wednesday.
Depending on the result of Friday's contest, the Boilermakers will take on either the winner or loser of the Richmond-Wright State matchup on Saturday to conclude the event. The weekend's games will be held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Times and television information are forthcoming.
The Boilers will host Oakland and Austin Peay at Mackey Arena in the tournament's first two rounds before heading to Chicago.
Purdue and Southern Illinois have met just twice before on the hardwood - Purdue wins in 1984 and 1985 - but the teams' intertwined history in recent years has been well-documented. Current Boilermaker head coach Matt Painter served as an assistant at SIU for six years under former longtime Purdue assistant Bruce Weber before taking over the reins for the 2003-04 season. Purdue associate head coach Paul Lusk played at SIU from 1993-95 and worked alongside Painter on the Salukis' coaching staff, while Boilermaker assistant coach Jack Owens held the same position in Carbondale from 2003-08.
Painter also served alongside current SIU head coach Chris Lowery on the coaching staff of the gold medal-winning USA U19 World Championship team in the summer of 2009.
Purdue is coming off of a banner season in which it claimed a share of its first Big Ten title in 14 years and made its second-straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. The Boilers return five players who started at least 20 percent of the team's games in 2009-10. Rising senior All-Americans Robbie Hummel and E'Twaun Moore are back in the fold, as is two-time All-Big Ten selection and Big Ten All-Defensive Team member JaJuan Johnson. Rising juniors Lewis Jackson and Ryne Smith, and rising sophomores Patrick Bade, Kelsey Barlow, D.J. Byrd and John Hart have also seen significant action in the Old Gold & Black.
