WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue junior Robbie Hummel was one of four players to score in double figures and the 2009 USA Men's World University Games Team held Finland (1-1) scoreless over the final 8:50 of the fourth quarter as the USA (1-0) opened World University Games play with an 87-40 victory on Friday night in Belgrade, Serbia.
Hummel, who played 18 minutes coming off the bench, was 4-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the 3-point line, and also added three rebounds, two blocked shots, two assists and a steal.
Team USA broke open a close game with late scoring runs at the end of the first and second quarters and enjoyed a 20-point lead at the break. The Fins, who shot just 23 percent from the field in the game (15-of-64), eventually wilted under the American defense and managed just two points in the final stanza as the American collegians cruised to victory.
The USA shot 50 percent from the field in the game on 32-of-64 shooting, including nine 3-pointers on 21 attempts (42.9 percent), and finished with 54 rebounds, seven blocks and nine steals.
Individually, Craig Brackins (Iowa State / Palmdale, Calif.) and Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.) led the way with 12 points apiece, and Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.) was perfect from the field and finished with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting to join Hummel in double figures.
The United States closes out preliminary play against South Korea (0-1) on July 4 (2:00 p.m. EDT). Second round action is scheduled for July 6-7, quarterfinals will be played July 9 and medal semifinals are slated for July 10. The gold medal will be contested on July 11 (3:00 p.m. EDT).
