Q+A with Scott Martin

By David Brienza, Purdue Sports Information student assistant

After a successful 2006-07 season in which Purdue reached the second round of the NCAA tournament the Boilermakers have reloaded with an exciting crop of freshmen this season and look to once again reach the Big Dance. Scott Martin one of the four highly touted freshmen coach Matt Painter inked to play for the Boilermakers has enjoyed a successful freshmen season to date.

Through four games this season, Martin led Purdue in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per-game and was second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 5.5 rebounds a game. In the Boilermakers Nov. 20th, 66-62 victory over Lipscomb Martin led Purdue with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds. After a highly successful high school career, Martin is looking to help put Purdue basketball back to the top of the Big Ten and as well as win a national championship. Purdue Sports Information had a chance to talk with Martin recently about how he came to choose Purdue, what his Purdue experience has been like so far and what he hopes to accomplish at Purdue.

How was coach Painter influential in getting you to come play at Purdue? He was a big deal, he's a great coach and he was definitely a big part of getting me to come here. He was just real honest and he told it how it was and I respected that and that was a big contributor. He was honest in how everything was gonna be, how everything was going to work here and that is the way its been.

How good has it been to have high school teammate Robbie Hummel at Purdue? Its nice and it helps the learning curve. Its nice, we're both going through the same thing and it just helps in that way. It's the same with JaJuan and E'Twaun.

Are you glad to be playing with E'Twaun Moore this season? Last year Moore's East Chicago team defeated Martin and Hummel's Valparaiso team in the 2007 IHSAA Regional Finals? It's a lot better than playing against him. It's a lot better having him hitting those shots for you rather than against you. He's a great player and I'm just glad to have him on my team.

How was playing your first regular season game in Mackey Arena? It was a great feeling to start playing. It's pretty much what we've been waiting on all year since basically that regional game. The fan support has been great. The crowds have been great, I enjoy it and I think they enjoy it a little bit too.

How was the experience of your first college road game against Clemson? It was tough, obviously you know. I think we played well, we battled through it, we obviously didn't get the result we wanted but it was definitely a good experience for us.

Who wins in a game of one-on-one, you or teammate Robbie Hummel? We usually split, it's usually pretty even.

Who's the better shooter, you or Hummel? I don't know, you'd have to look at the percentages.

Overall how are things going at Purdue? Good, things are real good. Everything is going well, I'm enjoying the whole experience, and everything at Purdue has been good so far.
