WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Joe Barry Carroll and Joy Holmes are two former Purdue basketball standouts who were not only amazing offensive players, but contributed a great deal on defense, as well. They have both been selected among the 24 Legends of Mackey Arena.

The Purdue University basketball facility is celebrating a $99.5 million expansion/renovation this season by recognizing the 12 most-popular Boilermaker men's and 12 most popular women's players, who have competed in the arena since its dedication in 1967. The 24 Legends of Mackey were chosen through a two-month on-line voting process by fans that garnered some 10,000 ballots.

Carroll's legendary size was only matched by his legendary achievements on the basketball court. He was a dominant force for the Boilermakers from the very beginning of his career. As a freshman, he recorded the only triple-double in school history with 16 points, 16 rebounds and 11 blocked shots at Arizona on Dec. 10, 1977. He holds the school records for career rebounds (1,148) and blocks (349), and is second only to Rick Mount with 2,175 career points.

Holmes also was a dominant force for Purdue. At 5-foot-10, the Ohio native not only was a great scorer but also a determined rebounder. In her senior year, the first team Kodak All-American averaged 21.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. On the defensive side of the court, she also added an astounding 3.4 steals per game. Holmes ranks sixth in school history in career scoring with 1,747 points, eighth with 744 rebounds, third with 323 steals and seventh with 131 blocked shots.

The remaining Legends of Mackey Arena will be announced two per week through the end of March. After the entire list becomes public, a line of products will be developed, including shirts, posters and calendars. Proceeds from the sales will benefit the 6th Boiler Scholarship Fund, which is raising money through the John Purdue Club to ultimately endow Boilermaker basketball scholarships.
