Purdue Hands Illinois First Big Ten Loss
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Brad Miller scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as No. 9 Purdue gave Illinois its first Big Ten loss, 68-58 Tuesday night.
Illinois (11-6, 3-1 Big Ten) trailed by 11 points with 14 minutes to play when Sergio McClain scored two baskets and made two free throws as the Illini used an 8-0 run to close within 46-43.
But the Boilermakers (15-3, 3-1) outscored Illinois 13-2 over the next five minutes, and the Illini got no closer than nine points the rest of the game.
Purdue held Kevin Turner, the Illini's leading scorer at 18.1 points, to seven points, while Jarrod Gee, averaging 8.9 points and 5.3 rebounds, was held scoreless and had only one rebound.
Matt Heldman led Illinois with 18 points, while Jerry Hester had 12 points and seven rebounds and McClain had 10 points.
Chad Austin scored 15 points and Mike Robinson had 11 for the Boilermakers, who won for their fourth straight game at Assembly Hall.
The lead seesawed back and forth in the first half until Illinois took a 25-20 lead with about eight minutes to go.
But the only points the Illini could score over the last six minutes came from free throws, and the Boilermakers used a 14-4 run to take a 36-31 halftime lead.
