WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Mateen Cleaves scored 15 of his 25 points in the first half as visiting Michigan State stunned fifth-ranked Purdue, 74-57, in the Big Ten Conference opener for both schools.
Andre Hutson matched a season high with 13 points for Michigan State (8-3), which snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Boilermakers and defeated them for the first time since the 1992-93 season. The Spartans have won four straight overall.
Brian Cardinal scored 18 points and Gary McQuay added 11 for Purdue (11-3), which still holds a 55-30 lead in the all-time series. The Boilermakers, the preseason favorites to win their fourth Big Ten title in five years, trailed by 12 at halftime and never closed within single digits in the second half.
Chad Austin and Brad Miller, who respectively average 19.1 and 17.7 points per game, were held to nine and eight. Purdue had a six-game winning streak halted.
