WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue baseball coach Doug Schreiber has announced the signing of six high school standouts to National Letters of Intent, a group of incoming players that will join the program for the 2012 season.

Schreiber and his coaching staff signed a pair of right-handed pitchers, two middle infielders, a catcher and a left-handed pitcher/outfielder. Signing on to attend Purdue and play for the Boilermakers includes: Michael Gaglianese (Oriskany, N.Y./Notre Dame), Connor Podkul (La Porte/La Porte), Brandon Krieg (Indianapolis/Lawrence Central), Bennett Oliver (Topeka, Kan./Washburn Rural), Kyle Upp (La Porte/La Porte) and Kyle Wood (Burbank, Ill./St. Laurence).

Strong-armed right-handed pitchers Gaglianese and Podkul should help Purdue immediately on the mound. Krieg and Oliver can play both middle infield positions. Upp is capable of playing third base in addition to providing his services behind the plate. Wood is a highly-touted two-way player, who provides power from the left-side on both the mound and at the plate.

Podkul is a 6-foot-5 right-hander that features an 87-89 m.p.h. fastball entering his senior year. While pitching to his teammate Upp at La Porte High School, Podkul struck out 79 batters in 53 1/3 innings while also posting a team-best 1.49 ERA.

Upp, meanwhile, batted .338 with 31 RBIs while throwing out 11 of 16 base stealers as a junior en route to earning all-conference honors. Both Podkul and Upp were key players in leading the Slicers to a Duneland Athletic Conference championship last spring.

Krieg has helped Lawrence Central High School to Conference Indiana titles the last two seasons. He batted .360 with four home runs and was a perfect 18-of-18 stealing bases for the Bears as a junior this past spring.

Wood was a First Team All-State, First Team All-Area and Catholic League MVP honoree after batting .538 with 14 home runs at the plate and compiling 73 strikeouts in 53 innings on the mound. Wood's 1.72 ERA and .162 batting average against were equally impressive as he led St. Laurence High School to a Catholic League championship in 2010.

Gaglianese, who is an outstanding three-sport athlete and can also play the infield, has been an all-conference performer and team MVP the last two seasons at both Oriskany and Notre Dame High Schools in Upstate New York.

Oliver enters his senior season as a three-year varsity starter. He was recognized as one of the area's top players by the Topeka Capital Journal. The left-handed hitting infielder batted .321 with four home runs and 28 RBIs for the Kansas City Sluggers travel team this summer.
