WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team has signed six players to National Letters of Intent, head coach Doug Schreiber announced today. The class includes three players from Indiana and one each from California, Illinois and Wisconsin. The six will enroll at Purdue in the fall of 2009.

"We are very excited to have signed these six outstanding student-athletes," Schreiber said. "Not only have they been successful on the field and in the classroom, but each has a strong commitment to win. This group will play a big role in the continued success of our program."

The three instate players are infielder/catcher Cameron Perkins from Indianapolis, pitcher Aaron Doughty from Greenwood and catcher Kevin Plawecki from Carmel. First baseman/pitcher Angelo Cianfrocco will head to the Midwest from San Diego, Calif., while pitchers Pat Gannon from Evergreen Park, Ill., and Brad Schreiber from Menasha, Wis., will play collegiately at Purdue somewhat closer to home.

As a junior Perkins broke the Indiana high school record for batting average, hitting .723 last spring. A 4A first team all-state selection for head coach Scott Whitlock at Southport High School, he finished the 2008 prep season with 20 doubles, nine home runs, 54 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.

Doughty, a 6-foot-6 right-hander that plays for head coach Andy Bass, was the top pitcher at Greenwood High School as a junior and was named to the 2008 Mid-State All-Conference team.

Rated as one of the top defensive catchers in the state, Plawecki led head coach Ryan Bunnell's Westfield High School club in nearly every offensive category in 2008, including batting average, hits, triples, home runs and RBIs. He was a Hoosiers Crossroads All-Conference selection as a junior.

The son of former Major Leaguer Archi Cianfrocco, left-handed Cianfrocco earned second team All-Palomar League honors at Westview High School for head coach Beau Champoux last season and also was selected for the 2008 North/South California All-Star team.

Gannon tossed three complete games at Brother Rice High School and finished his junior season 9-2 with 67 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings pitched for head coach Tim Lyons. The 6-foot southpaw has a 17-4 career high school record while pitching in the Chicago Catholic League's Blue Division, one of Illinois' toughest baseball conferences.

Schreiber, who will play for Ryan McGinnis at Kimberly High School this coming spring, returns for his senior season as the reigning Wisconsin State Baseball Coaches Player of the Year. The right-hander went 6-2 with a 1.27 ERA in 55 innings on the mound last season, and batted .536 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs at the plate.

The Boilermakers, who finished second in the Big Ten in both the regular season and the conference tournament in 2008, will open the 2009 season against Cincinnati on Feb. 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla., in the first ever Big East/Big Ten Challenge.
